About
At Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute, we treat you like family. We provide you with the friendliness and warmth of a community hospital and the advanced level of care you’d expect from a large, academic medical center. Every patient’s case is reviewed by teams of healthcare professionals that specialize in each patient’s specific type of cancer – these meetings are called multidisciplinary conferences. With our commitment to bringing together multiple specialists to create the best treatment plan for you, and our strong clinical research program, we’re delivering the highest standard of patient-centered cancer care to the entire Upstate South Carolina region.
Our numerous national certifications, including the Commission on Cancer designation, reflect the high standards of our entire cancer program.
To ensure that we develop the best possible cancer treatment plan for you, we hold weekly multidisciplinary conferences for multiple unique cancer programs.
Each program routinely brings together:
- Dieticians
- Genetic counselors
- Gynecologic oncologists
- Medical oncologists
- Navigators
- Pathologists
- Radiation oncologists
- Radiologists
- Social workers
- Surgeons
Working together, your cancer team evaluates imaging and lab results used to diagnose your cancer, they discuss other medical conditions that may affect your treatment, and they consider how they can best care for your physical and emotional well-being. Using their collective expertise, they develop a treatment plan designed to give you the best possible result. When appropriate, their discussion may also include clinical research trial options available through Gibbs.
Typically, your cancer team will recommend one or more of these cancer treatment methods:
Our team approach draws on the expertise of all three cancer specialties to select the appropriate cancer treatment options and the best order of treatment for you. When you come for an appointment, we do our best to arrange for you to see several specialists all in one visit. Through every phase of your treatment, we make you an active participant in decisions that affect your care.
Personalized services include:
- A dedicated nurse navigator who coordinates your care and is available for questions and emotional support
- Oncology rehabilitation services to help you maintain daily life skills through occupational, physical and speech-language therapy
- Nutrition counseling with oncology-certified dietitians who will work with you to help you maintain optimal nutrition through cancer treatment and beyond
Once you complete treatment, we have a survivorship program that offers you support as long as you need us.
At Gibbs Cancer Center, we have everything in place to provide you with exceptional care.
