Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Museum

The Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Museum, opened in May 2006, features hundreds of photographs and artifacts from the Upstate’s rich medical history.

The museum details the beginnings of the hospital industry in the Spartanburg area, featuring photographs of the original “cottage hospitals.” These hospitals later closed and used their sale proceeds to contribute to the 1921 founding of Spartanburg General Hospital, now Spartanburg Medical Center.

This community spirit is celebrated in the exhibition of artifacts not only from Spartanburg General but also from the founders of Mary Black Hospital.

The pride that physicians, employees and patients feel in being a part of “The General” is evidenced by the displays of nursing uniforms, nursing school yearbooks, employee photographs and even receipts from hospital stays.

Blueprints and newspaper articles illustrate both the growth of The General and also the detail involved in responsible growth.

Displays of medical instruments from times past demonstrate that the practice of medicine is an evolving science. Displays of nursing student examinations and textbooks are evidence of the work involved in becoming a medical professional.
