Neurosurgery Recovery Tips
- For two weeks after surgery, avoid lifting over 10 pounds and bending at the waist. Limiting any twisting and turning of your torso.
- Do not perform strenuous activities, including swimming. Limit sitting to no more than 30-40 minutes at a time.
- For assistance with wound care, do not submerge your body in water, such as a tub bath or jacuzzi. You may take a shower the second day after your procedure.
- Place an ice pack on your back for the first three days.

- It takes time for numbness and pain to improve after cervical or lumbar spine surgery.
- Some pain in the surgical area is normal for weeks following the procedure.
- If your post-operative pain is significantly worse than before surgery, contact your surgeon’s office immediately.
When going home, patients will likely receive prescriptions for pain and a
muscle relaxer to aid in post-surgical pain.The surgery team will authorize refills if needed. Please note that not all surgical teams offer refills for pain medications.
If a refill is authorized, the prescription refill will be sent electronically to your designated pharmacy. To aid in recovery and reduce the risk of constipation from pain medications, drink plenty of water.
Over-the-counter stool softeners and/or laxatives may be used for constipation.Please arrive 15-20 minutes before your appointment to fill out your medical history and registration forms. You may also be provided a health assessment or questionnaire to complete in advance of your visit. To cancel an appointment, please notify us 24 hours in advance so we can make the appointment available to another patient.

Current patients can schedule appointments by phone or use the MyChart patient portal or app to see available times.
If you are a patient currently using MyChart, you may be able to request a refill through the app or online portal. For prescriptions not available in MyChart, please make an appointment so a physician can evaluate if the medications need to be changed. It could take up to 24-48 business hours for a refill to be submitted.
Our practices use an electronic health record system that allows for a seamless patient experience through improved communications, timeliness, patient information storage and portability. This system, called MyChart, will allow you to view medications, allergies, health issues and recent visits.
New patients in our practices are asked to complete a medical release form before your appointment. The signed form gives us the ability to request medical records from other physician practices that you may have visited. This information provides our physicians with a more complete medical history. To obtain or transfer detailed medical records to another practice, please contact the Medical Records Office at 864-560-6273.
