Synonyms |
PTH w/Ca |
Specimen Type |
Serum and or plasma |
Container |
PTH: 4.0 ml Gold-top serum separator or |
Collection Instructions |
None |
Volume |
2 ml serum or plasma, minimum 0.5 ml |
Additional Information |
PTH: Heterophilic antibodies in human serum can react with reagent immunoglobulins, interfering with in vitro immunoassays. Patients routinely exposed to animals or to animal serum products can be prone to this interference and anomalous values may be observed. Additional information may be required for diagnosis. |
Patient Preparation |
none |
Specimen Processing Instructions |
Serum: Allow to clot. Centrifuge at 3380 rpm’s (±100) for a minimum of 10 minutes Plasma: Centrifuge at 3380 rpm’s (±100) for a minimum of 10 minutes Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection. Do Not freeze serum or plasma for the PTH |
Transport Requirements |
Refrigerated |
Specimen Stability |
PTH: Room temperature: 4 hours Refrigerated: 48 hours It is also extremely important to ensure that patient samples have been handled and stored correctly. Incorrect handling of samples will result in a lost of intact PTH. |
Rejection Criteria |
If not centrifuged within 2 hours of collection. |
Reference Range |
PTH: 19-88 pg/ml Calcium: 0-16 yrs = 8.5 – 11.5 mg/dl 17 yrs and up = 8.9 -10.3 mg/dl |
Critical Value |
PTH = None; Calcium = <6 mg/dl and >13 mg/dl |
Test Includes |
PTH and Calcium |
Methodology |
PTH: Chemiluminescent technology; Calcium: Indirect Potentiometry utilizing a Calcium ion selective electrode in conjunction with a Sodium reference electrode. |
