SIM

50068

CPT

83970; 82310

Synonyms

PTH w/Ca

Specimen Type

Serum and or plasma

Container

PTH:  4.0 ml Gold-top serum separator or
3.0 ml EDTA lavender stopper tube (EDTA is for PTH only)
Calcium:  3.5 ml Green - Lithium heparin plasma separator or
               4.0 ml Gold-top serum separator

Collection Instructions

None

Volume

2 ml serum or plasma, minimum 0.5 ml

Additional Information

PTH:  Heterophilic antibodies in human serum can react with reagent immunoglobulins, interfering with in vitro immunoassays.  Patients routinely exposed to animals or to animal serum products can be prone to this interference and anomalous values may be observed.  Additional information may be required for diagnosis.

Patient Preparation

none

Specimen Processing Instructions

Serum:  Allow to clot.  Centrifuge at 3380 rpm’s (±100) for a minimum of 10 minutes

Plasma:  Centrifuge at 3380 rpm’s (±100) for a minimum of 10 minutes

Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection.

Do Not freeze serum or plasma for the PTH

Transport Requirements

Refrigerated

Specimen Stability

PTH:  Room temperature:  4 hours   Refrigerated: 48 hours   It is also extremely important to ensure that patient samples have been handled and stored correctly.  Incorrect handling of samples will result in a lost of intact PTH.

Rejection Criteria

If not centrifuged within 2 hours of collection.
Frozen serum or plasma

Reference Range

PTH:  19-88 pg/ml

Calcium:  0-16 yrs = 8.5 – 11.5 mg/dl

                 17 yrs and up = 8.9 -10.3 mg/dl

Critical Value

PTH = None;  Calcium = <6 mg/dl and >13 mg/dl

Test Includes

PTH and Calcium

Methodology

PTH:  Chemiluminescent technology;  Calcium:  Indirect Potentiometry utilizing a Calcium ion selective electrode in conjunction with a Sodium reference electrode.

Testing Frequency

Daily, Monday - Sunday
