Container | 24 Hour Plastic urine container with no preservative. 6N HCl preservative is acceptable. Obtain urine container from the laboratory. |
Collection Instructions | Instruct the patient to void at 8 A.M. and discard the specimen. Then collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period (i.e., 8 A.M. the next morning) Container must be labeled with patient name, date and time collection started and date and time collection finished. Refrigerate during the collection. Screw lid on securely. |

Additional Information | Metanephrine and normetanephrine are metabolic products of epinephrine and norepinephrine, the adrenal medullary hormones. |
Patient Preparation | No caffeine before or during the collection. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors should be discontinued at least one week prior to beginning collection. |
Specimen Processing Instructions | Mix urine well. Measure and aliquot the 24-hour urine. Write the total 24-hour volume on the aliquot container. |
