Our Program

We are proud to announce our new OB/GYN residency program at Spartanburg Medical Center! We are excited for the birth of our new program, and look forward to introducing you to our Spartanburg family. The mission of our program is to nurture and prepare our residents to become our colleagues, who will advance health together with individuals, families and communities.

Welcome from the Program Director

Welcome from the Program Director

“The best things in life are often waiting for you at the exit ramp of your comfort zone.”
– Karen Salmansohn

Being part of our inaugural class will come with challenges. On the other hand, there are advantages that will make the challenges worth it. As part of this new program, you will be a powerful force for growth and change. You will make a true impact on communities in need. And, you will have an active role in establishing the identity and culture of the program.

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System is committed to advancing the healthcare of individuals, families and communities.  Adding an OB/GYN residency program to our already successful medical education programs is part of a strategic plan to improve the health care of the community of Spartanburg.

Spartanburg, SC is the 12th fastest growing metro area in the U.S., according to U.S. News & World Report’s fastest growing city list for 2023-2024. Neighboring Greenville, SC ranks 23rd on the same list, making the Upstate (Northwest) region of South Carolina the place to be. Our obstetrics and gynecology workforce will need to expand to keep up with the community’s growth. While Spartanburg County and Greenville County (directly to our west) have adequate access to maternal care, several counties to the east of us are desinated as “low access to care” or “maternity care desert” by the March of Dimes.

These women are coming to Spartanburg to deliver with little or no prenatal care. Additionally, almost 14% of women in Spartanburg County are without health insurance. Our residency program will expand access to care for the uninsured and underinsured population of Spartanburg and surrounding counties. Should you join us, you will leave your imprint on the fight to end the maternal care and maternal death crisis in a tangible, quantifiable way.

Spartanburg Medical Center has the foundation necessary for a successful OB/GYN training program. We have the numbers, the facilities, a supportive administration and wildly successful existing residency and fellowship programs. Frankly, I wouldn’t have taken this position if all of these qualities were not already present. I, too, did not plan to land at a non-existing program when I started my search to become a program director. But, the more I considered the idea, the more the thought invigorated me. My passion is educational innovation and I am grateful for this incredible opportunity to be a trailblazer. I have despised the words “that’s how we’ve always done it” ever since they were said to me as an intern. I am, by nature, a rule-follower.  But, nothing frustrates me more than having to follow rules that are antiquated or illogical just because.

I recognize that current trainees are efficient, application-based learners who are better stewards of their time than previous generations. Current trainees also value purpose, collaboration and meaningful impact on the community around them. I have taken the task of building a new residency progam as an opportunity to augment efficient, application-based training methods with values-imbedded learning experiences.

Simulation, digital learning and robotic surgery are what most consider innovations in medical education. But do you, my Millenial and Gen Z friends? Let’s face it – simulation, digital learning and robotic surgery are now standard and essential elements of a residency training program, and you WILL find all of those things here at Spartanburg Medical Center. So, what can we offer that’s truly inventive? We will employ some novel (and in some cases, “retro”) educational modalities including immersive learning, mentorship through apprentice-style learning, individualized and career-focused education and engagment with the community we serve through dedicated time for service and advocacy projects.

Please see our Curriculum section below (under What to Expect) for more information.

I hope you will continue to peruse our website and consider applying to our program. We look forward to growing our family here at Spartanburg Medical Center, and experiencing all of the challenges and triumphs that come with growth.

Best Regards,

Michelle W. Huang, MD
