OB/GYN Residency

Like every ACGME-accredited training program, we will provide the necessary patient experience, surgical training and educational foundation for you to be a competent obstetrician gynecologist who is capable of passing their written and oral board examinations.

Residents will spend the majority of their time at Spartanburg Medical Center, home to labor and delivery, the main operating rooms, the outpatient clinic and medical education facilities. Maternal fetal medicine and gynecologic oncology offices are also located at the main hospital campus. Resident call coverage will not cover multiple hospitals.

The SMC Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology is the outpatient clinic site, where we see 90-120 patients per day. Check out some of our annual statistics: 

The curriculum is carefully constructed to maximize learning efficiency.  The PGY-1 and PGY-2 years focus on foundational learning with immersive rotations in the main areas of obstetrics and gynecology. Almost all educational activities, continuity clinics and on-call duties will be specialized to the rotation. The PGY-3 and PGY-4 years focus on comprehensive management and are career-focused, closely mentored, and truly competency-based preparation for post-residency practice.

PGY-1

• Obstetrics – 12 weeks, including 4 weeks of OB-only night float

PGY-3

  Resident is paired with one of our generalist faculty covering the full scope of obstetric and gynecologic care including office practice, gynecologic surgery and on-call obstetric and gynecology coverage 
• WIN (What I Need) – 12 weeks
  Individualized rotation based on each resident’s competency progress and career goals
• Obstetrics Chief – 4 weeks
• Night Float Chief – 4 weeks (comprehensive OB and GYN care)
• Ambulatory Chief/Research – 4 weeks

PGY-4

• GYN Oncology Chief – 12 weeks

About the Curriculum

The didactic curriculum seeks to minimize lecture-style learning and attempts to infuse the content into the daily activities of each rotation.

Obstetric and gynecologic team conferences are held daily, Monday through Friday. These conferences use current patient cases as catalysts for discussions. Discussions are attending-led or resident-led and cover the CREOG Core Curriculum. The OB team will have weekly simulation and additional didactics. The GYN team will also have weekly skills labs in our brand new Surgical Skills Lab. Residents also have access to the Skills Lab 24/7. The GYN team conferences will include pre-op and post-op conference. Tumor board is held monthly.

Ambulatory conferences are held three days per week and include ultrasound conference and topic discussions.

Grand rounds are held monthly, as well as morbidity and mortality conferences.

Mock oral examinations occur quarterly.

Independent projects are completed annually, incorporated into the rotations and shared collectively.

Special events occur annually, such as advocacy celebrations, community service events, physical fitness competitions and simulation Olympics.

The entire resident complement will meet for large-group classroom didactics for four hours monthly for global learning topics, such as journal club, advocacy, wellness, patient safety and quality, scholarly activity/research, CREOG reviews and administrative meetings.

We will be accepting applications only through the new ResidencyCAS application system. We will be participating in signaling through ResidencyCAS and will participate in the NRMP Match. Only completed applications will be reviewed, including transcripts, personal statement, letters of recommendation and USMLE or COMLEX scores. At least one Standard Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) letter should be included, and all letters of recommendation are encouraged to utilize the SLOE format.

Logistics

Interviews will be virtual and will take place October through January. You will interview with the program director and at least two other faculty members. All applicants who complete an interview will receive an opportunity to attend a second-look visitation. However, we recognize that not all applicants have equal opportunity and accessibility for travel, so attendance is purely for the applicant’s decision-making. Each applicant who completes an interview will also have an opportunity for a virtual meeting with one of our Family Medicine, General Surgery or Transitional Year residents.
