Stat ordering and collection of Type & Screen is REQUIRED.  Transfusion of several units of blood prior to collection of the Type & Screen may make blood typing impossible and antibody screening invalid due to dilution from transfused donor blood.

Ordered by anesthesia or surgeon

OB Hemorrhage:  OB Cooler with or without stay ahead order

Ordered by anesthesia

Critical Care Protocol:    Ordered by Intensivists only

Whole Blood cooler:    Limited to eligible trauma patients

    (females >50 yrs or males)

Emerge cooler (male or female):  Limited to trauma patients

MTP:  Limited to trauma patients & only ordered trauma attending physician

Specimen Processing   Instructions

Type & Screen testing will initiate ASAP post receipt.    Second blood type may be required for patients without a historical blood type on file to enable transitioning to type specific blood products.

Transport Requirements

Emergency Release of Uncrossmatched blood may be sent via 6 inch pneumatic tube to applicable areas.  All other areas must pick up at blood bank window with proper blood release form.

All coolers from blood bank must be picked up at blood bank window with proper blood release form. 

Whole blood cooler and Emerge cooler are obtained from BloodTrack Emerge in trauma bay.
