If sample is collected at an outpatient office where the sample is not sent to the Laboratory within the hour for testing:

  • Centrifuge for 15 minutes
  • Remove plasma from the cells being careful not to remove any red cells.
  • Refrigerate plasma at 2-8 degree Celsius, stable for up to 4 hours.

Methodology

Antibody-coated latex particles agglutinate to form aggregates of a diameter greater than the wavelength of the light, more of the latter is absorbed.  This increase in light absorption is a function of the antigen level present in the test sample.
