Volume

1ml in sterile specimen container. 
Minimum of 3ml if collected in gray stoppered preservative tube.(Fill to marked line on gray stoppered tube)

Additional Information

Foley catheters not accepted for culture

Patient Preparation

• Clean genital area prior to collection 
• Wipe area dry 
• Discard first stream of urine 
• Collect the midstream flow of urine 
• Tighten container lid and label specimen appropriately

Unpreserved Urine: < 1hr at Room Temp; 1-24hrs Refrigerated 

Preserved Urine:  Room Temp

Specimen Stability

Unpreserved Urine > 1hr - Refrigerate 

Rejection Criteria

Urine transported > 1hr without refrigeration or preservative

No significant growth

Isolation and identification of urinary pathogens. Susceptibilities as appropriate. Organism colony count.
