Collection Instructions

Collect in blue top tube containing 3.2 % buffered sodium citrate.  Fill to completion to ensure proper blood to anticoagulant ratio.  Mix sample by gentle inversion

Min. volume: 1 ml.

Confirmation and characterization of congenital AT deficiency

Patient Preparation

Do not draw from an arm with a heparin lock or heparinized  catheter.  Patient should not be on heparin therapy because heparin decreases plasma AT levels.

Specimen Processing Instructions

Separate plasma from cells and freeze ASAP

Severe hemolysis; improperly filled tubes; thawed specimen; 
serum or specimen collected with anticoagulant other than sodium citrate

Reference Range

39% to 89% newborns levels are lower; levels reach adult ranges by 6 months.
