If you need surgery for a spine condition, your surgeon may suggest you do pre-rehabilitation (prehab).
Prehab is a rehabilitation therapy performed before a scheduled surgery. This therapy builds strength and improves the function of weak muscles.
Prehab is performed by physical and occupational therapists and may include:
- Aquatic therapy for those who have trouble with land-based exercises
- Hand and leg strengthening exercises to help with everyday activities
- Massage for pain in the neck and back
- Physical therapy for gait training
At Pelham Medical Center, our spine surgeons recommend prehab for all surgical patients.
