The MitraClip is a minimally invasive treatment for mitral valve prolapse (leaky heart valve). MitraClip can be an option for people who are not candidates for traditional heart surgery because of their age, heart failure and other risk factors.
Mitral valve prolapse causes blood to leak from the heart, leading to serious symptoms like shortness of breath, lung congestion and fatigue. The MitraClip procedure has improved the quality of life for many patients who were told they were not eligible for surgery.
How the MitraClip Procedure Works
During the MitraClip procedure, your interventional cardiologist will insert a catheter (thin tube) in your leg or groin area. Your physician will use the catheter to guide the MitraClip device to your heart’s mitral valve. They then permanently implant it in your heart to hold the flaps of the mitral valve in place, which stops the blood leakage. You will be put under general anesthesia for this procedure.
Your procedure will take two to four hours, and you can expect to stay in the hospital for about one to three days afterward. You should be able to return to everyday activities within two weeks.
