Esophagastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
EGD, or upper endoscopy, is performed to detect cancers, ulcers and sources of bleeding in the upper digestive tract. A thin scope is used to examine the esophagus and stomach. Physicians may also perform an EGD to help stretch out a constricted esophagus using a balloon.
