John Lucas, MD

Biography

John Lucas, MD, is a board-certified physician fellowship trained in primary care sports medicine practicing at the Sports Medicine Institute in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He sees patients at Sports Medicine Institute - Upward and Sports Medicine Institute - North Grove locations. He specializes in non-operative sports medicine with a special interest in concussions and their management. Dr. Lucas received his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Wake Forest Family Medicine program in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he was elected chief resident. Dr. Lucas is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). As a third-year resident, he received one of four national research grants from AMSSM to investigate the effects of progesterone on concussion. Additionally, he received the resident role-model award given by the medical students at the Wake Forest School of Medicine. He completed his sports medicine fellowship at Wake Forest where he served as a team physician for Wake Forest University. He also worked with the UNC School of the Arts treating acute and overuse injuries in dancers. He serves as a team physician for University of South Carolina Upstate and Spartanburg Methodist College, in addition to Chapman High School and several other area high schools. Since moving to Spartanburg, he has continued his academic interests through teaching medical students and residents. He has received the preceptor of the year award from the SRHS family medicine residency and the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) medical school. He is currently involved with the Clemson International Automotive Research Center (ICAR) researching the effects of concussion on driving tasks. Aside from medicine, Dr. Lucas enjoys spending time with his family. He is married to Emily, a Spartanburg native, and has three young children. He enjoys golf, fishing, and spending hot summer days at the lake. He is an active member of Grace Presbyterian Church.
