Cancer is a complex disease that can cause a wide range of emotions, including worry, fear, sadness and anger. The Behavioral Oncology program at Gibbs Cancer Center is staffed by specially trained clinical social workers equipped to care for the patients’ emotional and mental health needs. Cancer-related distress can be overwhelming and disrupt your life. These symptoms can include:
- Difficulty sleeping or appetite changes
- Loss of enjoyment in activities
- Constant thoughts of cancer/or death
- Anger and irritability
- Difficulty coping with life
- Feelings of hopelessness, fear, anxiety, sadness
Our licensed clinical social workers offer full psychosocial assessment and follow-up in a private, one-on-one setting. Some of the issues that can be addressed through the program include:
- Dealing with mood changes
- Adjustment to your cancer diagnosis
- Anxiety and uncertainty about your prognosis
- Communication with your family and support system
