Community Healing Arts Program

Doctors don’t usually write prescriptions for performances and paintings, but at Spartanburg Regional, the arts often show up in a healthcare setting, and have become a welcomed part of the healing process by both patient and caregiver.

Since its inception in 1997, The Healing Arts Program has combined the soothing powers of the creative arts with modern medicine. It utilizes the talents of local and visiting artists through visual displays, scheduled performances, and literary arts activities. The Healing Arts Program was created through a partnering of the Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg and Spartanburg Regional to promote and foster the use of the arts in the healing process.

Musical performances have included everything from a guitarist visiting individual patient rooms to choirs performing in larger areas of the hospital. However, the program is not just about music; patients and caregivers may also enjoy perusing the art exhibits on display in one of our public areas.

To honor the very special leader whose guidance and vision helped give wings to The Healing Arts in our community, a special fund has been set up through The Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Foundation to receive donations in support of this program.

The Katie Adams Hodge Healing Arts Endowment will be used to ensure the continued growth and expansion of the many visual, performing and literary arts programs available to patients and their families, as well as, to hospital employees throughout the entire healthcare system.
